I am an associate professor in the Geosciences Department at Mississippi State University. Before coming to MSU, I attended Florida State University, where I received my PhD in Geography. My dissertation focused on the role of the weathercaster during severe weather and the relationship viewers develop with him (in the market I studied they were all men). Since then, my research has continued to focus on communication of weather information and the response of individuals during extreme weather. More recently, I've also studied perceptions of science activities, careers, and majors among teachers and students, with the goal of enhancing diversity in Geoscience fields. One area of research I would like to pursue further involves animals and hazards--how do people care for animals in extreme weather, and why do people perceive animals as hazards. When I began at MSU, I taught the Practicum in Broadcasting Meteorology classes. I currently teach mostly distance learning classes, with the occasional on-campus class. My teaching is primarily on the subjects of hazards, weather and society and research methods. |

I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, in
eastern Pennsylvania. It's really a beautiful place,
and I try to visit my family as much as I can. I also like
to travel with my husband, John, who also works in the
department. Outside of work, I have a love for dogs,
especially pit-bulls, historic homes, and old cars. I also
enjoy preparing and eating all kinds of food. |
